This is amazing! Thank you for nerding out on planning and sharing how you achieve your goals with plans! I especially liked the tie-in with how you want to be remembered at your deathbed. I found a similar insight after I had to co-write a family member's obituary. I naturally started making better goals and I wasn't really sure why.

Thanks, Nicole! I imagine writing that obituary was challenging, and I'm always impressed how people can do that during a short & stressful period. Your anecdote reminds me of a TED talk David Brooks gave about "eulogy values" - maybe we could reflect on how our obituary will read?

Just listened to the TED talk! What a great talk! As for writing the obituary, the fun part-- if there is any fun part-- was that we promised the departed to spend as least money as possible on all memorial related costs like this, and the local newspaper charged per word. Therefore we ended up squeezing an entire decades long career into only a few words, because we knew that they wouldn't have wanted that to be the focus, and would have probably been ok if it wasn't mentioned at all! It really puts it all into perspective

Cost/word adds a new meaning to economical writing! When forced to choose every word carefully, it's cool to see how you focused on their other qualities (family, character, community involvement - I imagine) over their career. The irony of me clumping these more important factors into an "other" category is another discussion haha

Yep! Family and education. Education, because she was so involved as the unofficial social leader of her graduating class alumni group that one of the eulogies from the group wondered whether their group will even survive without her... So even the line about education was more about community and character than the resume!

Wow, she sounds like a great person and definitely an integral part of that community--way more of a sticking point than a job alone
